Work Style Wednesday

Every Wednesday, Canadian Lawyerista reviews work appropriate, yet stylish clothes. Think of her as your own personal shopper!

Green Style

To celebrate Earth Day, all my posts this week are green themed.

Eco Chic fashion is a lot easier than it used to be. There are many options. Thrift, vintage, repurpose clothing, buy organic and ethically made clothing, and, um, buy less stuff.

For this post, I decided to look at what is available to my Canadian readers looking for organic clothing. The answer is plenty. Do a Google search for "eco friendly fashion" and you will get many hits. One of the first I came across was greenisblack.ca.

Check out these great jeans. Pair them with this cute jacket or this cute kimono sleeve top. Need shoes and accessories? Less selection for the shoes, but how about these metallic babies with the outfit? Add a pair of cute beach glass earrings, picked from the shores of the Great Lakes and a reclaimed leather bag, and you are good to go.

Tuesday's Tip

Every Tuesday, Canadian Lawyerista provides tips and tricks for, you know, life.

Green Tips

Yes, I am posting this on Wednesday, which is Earth Day. As mentioned on Monday, all my posts this week will be green themed. I will have a Work Style Wednesday green post later today.

So, for Tuesday's Tip, I am just going to run down tips for being greener, living environmentally friendly, et cetera. I am not preaching here, just providing some ideas. I don't do everything on the list, and some of the things I do I don't do all the time. My thinking on green living is that people need to do as much as they can as much of the time as they can. We can all make a difference if we make small (and large) changes in our lifestyle.

In no particular order, here are some easy ways to be greener:

Use cloth bags for shopping. Go one better and buy some cloth bags for vegetables and bulk products as well. Ecobags are great and I always get asked about them when I whip them out at the store. My Canadian friends can get these at GoneShopping.ca.

Use a travel mug. I am guilty of going through the drive thru and not using my travel mug waaay to many times. Oh, the shame! When I'm being really good, I make my own coffee so I don't need to buy one.

Don't print your bank machine receipts. Do you really need it? If everyone said "no" to the receipt selection, that would be a whole lot of paper saved and not wasted. You can also do this when you do a pay at the pump. I also try to remember what stores print off duplicate Interac receipts and tell them I don't need it before they print it.

Include a line in your email signature reminding people to think of the environment and print the email only as necessary. My office is not yet paperless and I have to print off most emails to keep a record of them in the paper file, so I try to start a new email instead of continuing a long thread so less paper gets printed or only print the first page.

Use a re-usable coffee filter.

Get energy saving devices to reduce water flow in your shower, taps and toilet. Union Gas customers can get one for free.

Ensure that water pipes and water heaters are insulated properly so there is no heat loss.

Make "green" food choices. Choose whole foods. The less "stuff" a food has gone through, the less impact on the environment. Eat organic and/or locally grown food, whichever is more important to you.

Plant a garden. You can't eat more locally than your own back yard or terrace.

Walk or bike or use public transportation. Carpool. Buy a fuel efficient or hybrid vehicle. Choose greener fuel. Don't let your vehicle idle. Keep your vehicle well maintained to use the least amount of fuel.

Use fluorescent bulbs. Turn off the lights. Put outdoor lights on timers or motion sensors.

Wash clothes in cold water. Hang wet clothing to dry inside or outside on a line. If think they are too "crunchy", fluff them in the dyer for a bit or iron them. Only run the washer when full.

Turn the heat down. Put on a sweater.

Use the most energy efficient appliances you can afford.

Make sure your toilet and taps don't leak. Follow the "if it's yellow let it mellow if it's brown flush it down rule" (um, this is not for everyone).

Turn the tap off when brushing teeth, soaping up hands, shaving, washing dishes.

Take a shower instead of a bath or use less water if you do take a bath.

Keep water in the fridge instead of letting the tap run to make it cold.

Bring your own reusable containers to your favourite take out places.

Compost.

Use a laptop instead of a desktop computer - they use less energy.

Don't use a screen saver, set your computer to go to sleep when you aren't using it. Or, just shut it off.

Beware of phantom power! Anything that is plugged in still uses electricity when not in use but plugged in. Unplug stuff when not in use, or buy a power bar and turn the power bar off when you aren't watching television, et cetera.

Photocopy and print on both sides of the page. Save old paper for notes.

It is not always necessary to pre-heat your oven. Also, you can turn the oven off a few minutes before cooking time is over.

Put a lid on a pot when you need to boil something.

Only put enough water in the kettle for what you need. No sense wasting electricity heating water you may throw down the drain, right?

Use a re-usable pen. You only fill the ink, not the whole pen. Plus, it looks fancy.

Take yourself off mailing lists by contacting the company directly or calling the Canadian Marketing Association and asking that your name be taken off their list: 416-391-2362. Put up a “No Junk Mail” notice on your mailbox.

Refill toner instead of buying a new cartridge.

Recycle everything you can, including e-waste like computers and cell phones.

Choose products with less packaging.

Make conscious purchases. Do you really need more stuff?

Use cloth napkins and cloth towels or rags instead of paper napkins, towels, and wipes.

I could go on and on here, but I think you get the idea. Do a Google search on "green tips" for more ideas.
